This site is has just some of the fascinating
history of the village.
It has been documented that there were sites around this
area from pre-historis times right through until the present day. To us the village has seemed to be a very little fish in
a big pond, but when researching the material for this site, it seems that this is untrue.
The village has beed recorded in the Domesday book of 1086,
when it had a church and 2 fisheries yielding a 1000 eels per annum.
We know of at least 3 recorded churches on this site and
there is a vague reference to a fourth. The Manor has passed through many families either by descent or marriage. The
Sternes once held it, descended from the Archbishop of York. Thomas Wolsey bought the Manor at Kexby, until he was proclaimed
a traitor, and all of estates were forfeited, Henry VIIIs wife Jane Seymour's sister married the into the Oughtreds at Kexby
Old Hall; it would be quite an interesting thought, that the monarchy then, may have passed through or even stayed in the
village.
Thanks to the release of the census returns I have been
able to try and piece together the village in the 19th century, and the history of the people that lived then.
